JGC, Samsung Heavy win contract for Petronas FLNG
Third FLNG project in Malaysia will produce at least 2 million tonnes of gas per year
Michael Marray 18 Jan 2023

A consortium of Japan‘s JGC Corporation and South Korea’s Samsung Heavy Industries has been awarded the engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning (EPCC) contract for a nearshore floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) project for Malaysian energy giant Petronas.

JGC's main responsibilities will cover the EPCC work for the FLNG topside, associated onshore facilities, and management of the overall project. Samsung Heavy will be responsible for the FLNG hull and the modular fabrication of the topside.

The project will be the third FLNG facility to be constructed for offshore gas fields in Malaysia, with a minimum production capacity of 2 million tonnes of LNG per annum. It is scheduled for completion in 2027.

Since the 1980s, JGC has executed EPC projects for Petronas for all nine trains of the LNG plants at the Petronas LNG Complex in Bintulu, Sarawak, which has an annual capacity of 29 million tonnes per annum. In 2021 it completed Petronas' second FLNG facility, PFLNG Dua, the world's first deep-water FLNG facility currently in production.

The Japanese contractor also led an FLNG project in the Coral South field in Area 4 in the Rovuma Basin off the coast of Mozambique. The facility made its first shipment last November. JGC is currently performing the front-end engineering design (FEED) for another FLNG project in Nigeria.
