Swedish energy company Ellevio has acquired the transmission network that connects Europe's largest wind farm cluster Markbygden 1101 near the town of Pitea in northern Sweden.

With the acquisition of Markbygden Net AB,  Ellevio is establishing itself in Sweden's northern electricity region for the first time, strengthening its role in accelerating the country’s move towards net-zero emissions by 2045.

For many years Ellevio has worked to connect more wind and solar farms in its own network areas in central Sweden. Investments to modernize and expand the capacity of regional and local networks, as well as large investments in energy storage facilities, are important as renewables become a larger part of the country‘s electricity system.

Green transition is happening across the country. By expanding northward, Ellevio seeks to come closer to several large electricity producers as well as Sweden's most electricity-intensive industries.

Markbygden Net AB was previously owned by Svevind AB (75%) and German wind turbine manufacturer Enercon (25%).

The wind farm has total production capacity of 3,400 megawatts, delivering up to 12 terawatt-hours of electricity per year or around 7% of Sweden's total power production.

The Markbygden Net AB electricity grid connects parts of the Markbygden 1101 farm cluster, with 1,700MW of distribution capacity and 5-6 TWh of annual generation.
